New Midi Kits now avilable!

LinnDrum MIDI Mod Manual

The Forat Electronics MIDI Mod for the LinnDrum allows your LinnDrum to send and receive MIDI information whenever drums are played. It also generates or syncs to MIDI clock and handles MIDI start, stop, continue, and song position pointer. In addition, the Mod supports MIDI disk drive saves and loads. A user-friendly
SETUP program is provided, and all settings are retained, even when the power is off. It is never necessary to open the cover of your LinnDrum to perform SETUP or enter MIDI sync mode. All operations are performed using the front panel buttons.

SETUP MODE

Use SETUP to change the MIDI note numbers that are assigned to the drums, to change the MIDI channel assignment, and to enter a starting offset for MIDI sync.

To enter SETUP mode with the power to the LinnDrum off, hold down the LOAD button and switch the power on. The STEP DISPLAY shows left and right brackets [ ] to indicate that the LinnDrum is in SETUP mode. You may exit from SETUP mode at any time by pressing the LOAD button. Any changes are stored in non-volatile memory and will not be lost when power is turned off.

TO CHANGE THE MIDI CHANNEL OR NOTE ASSIGNMENTS

Enter SETUP mode, and then play any note on a keyboard or sequencer connected to the LinnDrum MIDI in. The LinnDrum will be assigned to the MIDI channel the note was sent on until the next time SETUP is entered. If no MIDI message is received before SETUP is terminated, then the channel number remains unchanged. Note numbers are assigned to drums by pressing a DRUM BUTTON and then playing the desired note. As each note is played, its note number is displayed in the PATTERN NUMBER window. Any or all drums may be assigned or reassigned in this manner. If the wrong drum is selected, simply select a different one and then play the note. The first drum will remain unchanged. When shipped from the factory, the note numbers are pre-assigned as shown on the following chart:

The SETUP routine also gives you the ability to shift in time the absolute syncing of the LinnDrum. To offset the MIDI sync, press and hold down the LEFT OR RIGHT ARROW. The PATTERN NUMBER window displays the number of clocks that the LinnDrum will be offset from other MIDI equipment. Numbers displayed in the RIGHT HAND DISPLAY indicate a positive offset, while those in the LEFT HAND DISPLAY are negative. 0 means no offset. The maximum offset in either direction is 8. Pressing the RIGHT ARROW BUTTON will cause the numbers to increase to 8 and then wrap back to -8. Pressing the LEFT ARROW BUTTON does the opposite. Each clock is about 10 milliseconds at a tempo of 120 BPM. To exit SETUP mode press LOAD.

MIDI CLOCK & SONG POINTER

Whenever the LinnDrum is put in PLAY mode, MIDI start and clock messages are sent. Since the LinnDrum operates at 48 clocks per quarter note and MIDI clocks are 24 per quarter note, MIDI clock commands are sent every two LinnDrum clock cycles. When the PLAY/STOP button is pressed, a MIDI stop command is sent and no further MIDI clocks are transmitted.

To slave the LinnDrum to MIDI sync, turn the LinnDrum power on while holding down the EXT SYNC button, and then press the PLAY button.

When a MIDI start command is received, the LinnDrum's play light comes on. If the master sends a MIDI song position pointer command, the LinnDrum silently clocks the song very rapidly until the desired point is reached. It then beeps, indicating that the CONTINUE button on the master may now be pushed and play will begin.

Play continues until a MIDI stop command is received. When this happens, the LinnDrum no longer responds to MIDI clock commands and is in pause mode. In this idle state, the only way to do normal front panel operations is to press the PLAY/STOP button. The continue command only works if a song or pattern has been playing, and a MIDI stop command is received.

All MIDI sync play back is synchronized to the MIDI timing clock offset by the value entered using the SETUP mode described previously. Two LinnDrum clocks are generated for each MIDI clock received. Some equipment does not adhere to the MIDI specification and may send a song position pointer, a continue command and clocks immediately. The MIDI mod will attempt to catch up, but results are not guaranteed.

SYSTEM EXCLUSIVE

The Forat LinnDrum Midi kit supports saving and loading patterns and songs via Midi System Exclusive (SysEx).

You can use any SysEx capable sequencers including most Akai MPC's, SysEx librarians such as MIDI-OX or Midi Disk Drives like the Peavey Midi Librarian or the Alesis Data Disk.

To store your LinnDrum patterns and songs, connect both Midi IN and OUT of your LinnDrum to Midi OUT and IN of your sequencer then program your sequencer to send out the following SysEx command: F0 15 08 01 F7

Upon receiving this command, the LinnDrum will transmit all pattern and song data back to the sequencer to be recorded.
